ok so I have these 2 math questions that I need help on cause I don't understand it at all. So if you could help me it would be great!

It says

use the expression p + r x p to calculate the total cost of the following.

1) a sweather costs $ 29.95 with sales tax of 6 %.
What is the total cost of the sweater?

2) A car costs $11,000 with sales tax of 8 %.
What is the total cost of cars?

thank you so much to everyone who helps me

p represents the price or cost of the item before sales tax is applied.

r represents the sales tax rate.

to solve either problem, plug the values in and then it is simply multiply and add.

for instance, the first one would be:

29.95 + 29.95 x .06 =

(I don't have my calculator handy, but you should be able to take it from there and do the second one in the same fashion)

just a reminder, the percentage has to be converted to a decimal, which you do by dividing by 100 or simply moving the decimal point two places to the left (5 % becomes .05 for instance.

note that the expression factors to p(1+r) so that an equivalent way to do the first problem would be:

29.95(1+.06)= 29.95(1.06) = the answer which should and must be the same as the one you got earlier.

Good luck.

When you have a percent to add on, multiply the original by 1 + the percent.

For example, 29.95 * 1.06 = 31.75

You could do this by multiplying 29.95 * 6% = 1.80. That is the tax paid. Then 29.95 + 1.80 = 31.75 for the total price. But why do two steps when you can get by on one?

so you have to figure out the tax in dollar term. in order to do that you would multiple the price of the item by decimal form of the percentage.

so first question.

find out the tax is dollar value by 29.95 * .06.

then add the answer to the original value of the item to get the answer.

same method for the second question.

well what i think is the problem is the answer to the equation 6+$29.95*(times)6
the second is the answer to the equation 8+$11,000*(times)8
good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sweater
29.95+(29.95 * .06) = final answer
p + (p x r)
car
11,000 + (11000 * .08) = final answer
p + (p x r )
