Unfortunately, U.S. soccer is at such a low point that doubling interest would just scratch the surface. Pele was not only considered the best player in the world but was much more appealing to an American audience than Beckham and his influence really only got people excited in New York.
The U.S. audience not only wants stars but stars in their cities so one player only does so much.
The Spanish speaking fans are the strongest followers of soccer in the U.S. both at stadiums and for television.
The Chicago Fire just brought in a big Mexican star but I read the Chicago newspapers and can not remember his name.
Soccer is becoming a bigger participatory sport in the U.S. but I think major successes in the World Cup would be needed to get the American audience excited about watching the sport. I watch Beckham closely in the World Cup and was quite disappointed.

No, futbol is a growing sport in America already, and I feel will one day be a major sport in America though not because of Beckham. He will help draw some attention to it, but it will take a future player from America to become a star and dazzle American's as they have a hard time accepting something if they don't invent it or have a superstar in it.

Infact, I believe the first U.S. futbol star is already alive today, whether he knows it or not.
