Do the reality shows pay there bills?

I know they get paid a wage for the time that they are filming the show because they are classified as "employees" of the show, I remember hearing about that on Australia Big Brother.
As far as keeping their jobs, I guess that's on a case by case basis. There was a woman on the Australian Biggest Loser earlier this year who had been told by her boss that her job was safe while she was away, yet a few weeks later she recieved a call saying she was sacked. And to make it worse, she was eliminated a couple of days later.

Some, I assume, have money in the bank and a family member pays the bills for them, and some of them have lost jobs. They just quit and find another when they go home.

Surviror contestants get a sliding scale of $2500 to the $1 million.
So they do get compensated for the time.
