My angelfish have laid eggs in my aquarium. They are aggressive, so I have removed the other fish from the tank for the time being. Can somebody tell me how long before these eggs hatch, and will the angels eat the babies??

Trying to get a feel for what to expect.. so I know what to do. Thanks so much! :)

Hatch time varies depending on temperature, but 48-72 hours is in the typical range.

Angels are usually very good parents so removing them is generally not required. That said, there are bad pairs of angels that don't make good parents and eat the fry, but that is uncommon.

The question you need to ask yourself is: what am I going to do with this many baby angelfish? You really can't sell them until they're about the size of a nickel. You've seen how big they get so you know you can't keep them all. Your best bet is to just leave them alone, leave the other fish in there, and let nature take it's course. The parents will guard, fan, and clean their eggs/fry until one day soon the fry will succumb to the other fish or the undergravel filter. If you are determined to keep this clutch wait until the fry are barely free-swimming and then transfer them to their own tank. If you try and move the eggs off of the side of the tank you'll end up killing them. Gently siphon the fry with a piece of airline tubing into a bare-bottom one gallon aquarium equipped with a very fine airstone barely trickling bubbles. The fry will live off of their yolk sac for another day or so and will need to be fed newly-hatched brine shrimp until they can be weaned onto regular fish flakes. Once they start to look like angelfish instead of eyes-with-tails, move them into their own 10-20 gallon aquarium set up with a regular undergravel filter, plants, etc. Expect heavy losses your first time and have fun. Rest assured the parents will spawn again! Check out http://websvirginia.com/angels/... for more info.

I have had a breeding pair of angel fish and it is only 2-3 days until the fry hatch. Once they do the parents are very protective of them. The pair will often swim around picking all the little fry up in their mouths when they stray to far and will spit them back out where they want them so don't panic if you think they are eating them at first. The easiest thing to do though is to remove the fry into a separate tank as it will be a while until they are big enough that the others won't eat them. Another note, you will probably have at least 75 fry hatch out and a good chance if you feed them properly and keep them safe that 1/3 will grow up just fine. Good luck.

I posted a link with some good information for you below. It takes 24 to 40 hours for the eggs to hatch. I just looked it up in my book called "Aquarium Fishes Of The World". Angelfish do take care of their fry.

as long as they seem to be a pair length does not rely . I truly have relatively some pairs of Angel fish I truly have a woman lots smaller than the male and that they've been breeding for the final 5 years . as long as they are sufficiently previous to reproduce and you have a pair then there is not any longer a topic

Here is a great site with all the info you need about breeding them, and you're not suppose to remove the pair from the tank, read this site and you will understand
