moths fly around light bulbs because naturally they are attracted to moonlight. I am not sure what the biological benefit would be for a moth to be attracted to the moonlight but it is... in any event a lot of our lights bulbs tend to be much brighter than the moon which would be why the moths become confused and fly around the light (it's like a super bright and much closer moon) ... little side note... in las vegas (can't remember the name of the casino but it's shaped like a pyramid) there is a huge moth problem with a certain casino that emits a huge beam of light from the top point... tens of millions of moths can be seen for what seems like miles into the sky darting in and out of the light... many people have tried to figure out a way to keep the moths away, simply because it looks just a little gross if you're not into bugs

moths use the moon for navigation, when they're flying across the landscape. So they fly at a constant angle to moonlight, and the moonlight tends to come in parallel, because the moon is so far away. However, if you bring in something that looks like moonlight, like light bulbs, light coming from light bulbs, right down to them, they actually think they went past the moon, so they circle back, and then they circle again and then pretty soon they just keep going round in circles, and they go right around what they think is the moon, so they're very confused.

Moths use the light of the moon to find mates. Our lights trigger the search response and they flutter around emitting pheromones and looking for mates.

The moon and stars are navigating cues. This partly explains why moths end up at lights. They also use light for gravitational cues, use of the light sources from above to maintain "up-down" orientation in their eveironment.

because other smaller insects are attracted to the light too. the moths are trying to eat them.
some say its beacuse they usually navigate by moon light, but other (modern) lights confuse them
and something to do with a visual distortion called a Mach band.
