If an alternative band has a #1 hit are they still alternative?

mainstream and alternative are not opposites, indie is the opposite of mainstream, it would still be considered alternative but possibly also pop

I think the term alternative has to do with classification of the type of music not about being a sellout, so I think they still would be.
