They can if you know what you're doing. I think you usually need a permit to have one and they can bite really hard (through 2 pairs of leather gloves.) I used to volunteer at a wildlife shelter and we once recieved a squirrel that someone had found as a baby and decided to keep as a pet. They didn't know what to feed it or how to care for it. It died 6 months after we got it because it had bone disease (bones would break easily) and lost its eyesight. If you do decide to get one, please please please research on how to properly take care of it!
EDIT: Not all squirrels grow up to be wild and mean. The center had two that we used for educational purposes. They were very calm, even around children, and were very much like any domesticated pet.

These are unusual circumstances, but my grandparents kept 2. They took them in as baby orphans and kept them in the house until they could get around easily. Then they brought them out to the big workshop that never had gas fumes in it. Grandpa cut a hole in an upper corner and showed them where it was. Then they let them have free reign and they stayed for 4 years.

well squirrels are very skiddish little animals so if they ever got out it'd be impossible to catch. some people do have them as pets but personally i wouldn't want one, they'll get into everything.

No because a squirrel does not take shots there for has rabees so if by any chance it bites you u will get seriously sick and close to death. Also a squirrel is an outdoor animal. it can not survive to a indoor habitat. =)

No. They are really cute and sweet as babies, but when they grow up they become wild. They pee and poop everywhere, and they bite. They need huge areas and trees to run and exercise on, and they are very territorial. They can develop severe behavior problems when caged--I know of one that chewed 2 of it's own legs off from nerves.
