Does anyone know if a pitcher has ever been credited for a win without throwing a single pitch? The probable scenario, would be if a relief pitcher entered a game, with the score tied, probably the top half of the 9th, runners on base with 2 out. He picks off a baserunner, and in the bottom half of the 9th inning, his teams scores a run to win the game. As the last pitcher, he would then be credited as the winning pitcher......

It happened to a Royals pitcher within the past six years -- I'm thinking 2003. I'll see if I can dig up the game box.

Ah! Right year, wrong team. Orioles reliever BJ Ryan, on 01-May-2003. The situation: Baltimore at Detroit, tied 1-1 in the middle of the sixth. Infante singled with two out to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Ryan came in and, without delivering a pitch, picked off Infante. Inning over. The O's then scored three in the top of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, making Ryan the pitcher of record since the lead changed. Groom took the mound in relief of Ryan starting the bottom of the eighth, but the Tigers did not score again, final Orioles 5 - Tigers 2. Ryan got the W.
It's rare, but it does happen.

That is a very good question. I don't know personally, but check an on-line baseball encyclopedia.

This is true...but I am not sure if it ever has happened. The odds of it happening are very slim.
