Knife and fork make up a plural subject so WERE is correct.

Don't count on "Native speakers" to always be correct. Native speakers are notoriously bad at their own native grammar.

Probably 90% of them would say "Come to the store with Jim and I" when the PROPER grammar is "Come to the store with Jim and me"

Knives and forks were used in the Edo period.

It wasn't just one knife and fork for everybody to use anyway!
