no you can't use a phone line.....but you can use an ethernet cable. your router should have many empty ethernet slots....just hook that cable in one of those and the other end into your xbox. if you don't have a router then you will need to buy one.......
difference between modem and router?.....modems are usually provided by your dsl/cable companies and they only have one ethernet slot (and maybe with one usb slot also)....but you cannot use the ethernet and usb slots at the same time on a modem (that will fry your modem and the usb port is provided only for an alternative way to hook your computer)....so long story short.....if you see only one ethernet slot on back of your modem/router....then you know for sure that its a modem and not a router and you will need to buy a router to hook it up with your xbox...or you can hook the modem to your xbox while you play it and keep your computer unhooked.
i suggest that you buy a router if you don't have one and keep everything connected at all times. wired routers are pretty inexpensive and you can get one for under 20 bucks on ebay. if you really want to get high tech then buy a wireless router...connect it with your modem....and buy another wireless game router for xbox....that will make your xbox wirelessly connected to your internet.
