It depends on the which series, like in the Harry Potter movies, it is helpful to have seen the 1st - 4th movies before seeing the 5th one that is coming out now. It would be very hard to catch up and understand the characters. However, it is not necessary to have seen the original "Airplane" to see the sequel "Airplane 2." A person can still get enjoyment out of the sequel without having seen the first one.

"What movies would you like to see a sequel to before the cast dies?" Conan of Aquilonia - This sequel to 'Conan the Barbarian' and 'Conan the Destroyer' has the 60-year old King Conan pitted against his arch-foe, black magician Thoth-Amon of Stygia. Based on the book by Sprague de Camp and Lyn Carter. Arnie can reprise his role (being about the right age). The only problem with this is that no characters from the earlier movies appear in the book. Mind you, that's nothing a good writer couldn't fix, and Grace Jones, Tracy Walter, Olivia D'Abo, etc. are still around. Too bad Mako has kicked the bucket, so we can't include him.

I think you do, otherwise you'll get really confused-- especially in a movie like Lord of the Rings or Pirates of the Caribbean. My friend went to see Spiderman 3 and Pirates 3 before she had seen the first two, and she was totally confused. Also, it's not really fun to watch a movie when you don't know what's going on, etc... so of course you are right on this. =)

Series of movies that have storylines that continue require that you see the first one before the last (like the Back to the Future series or even Harry Potter.) Series that don't continue the story line to the next move can be watched out of order (like the Die Hard series.)

Not always. it depends on the movie. You might have to in order to understand the sequel but there are some in which it's not necessary.

I think you do because even if you understand what's going on you still miss out on things in the plot.
