This is what you do

1. First, dive 2709 by 412. This helps to find how many times you have to fill the tank. (6.5752427)
2. Since # is too long, lets round to 6.6
3. Now, multiply 6.6 by 22.86 (150.88)
4. Answer is about $151. (If your calculating for your own trip, bring about $200 dollars incase something happens).

Actual answer would be $150.31005

This is a little tricky in that you only need to stop for gas 6 times and on the 6th stop you don't need to fill it all the way to get where you're going. When you arrive at your 6th stop you've travelled:
412 (miles) x 6 = 2472 (miles)
and you've have previously purchased gas 5 times totalling to:
$22.86 x 5 = $114.30
You can fill up again to bring your total spent to:
$114.30 + $22.86 = $137.16
or buy just enough gas to go the final amount of miles which is:
2709 (miles) - 2472 (miles) = 237 (miles)
since your rate is:
$22.86/412 mi.
multiply it by the 237 miles left to go:
($22.86/412 mi.) x 237 mi. = $13.15
add this to what you've already spent and your total is:
$114.30 + $13.15 = $127.45 ( this should be the answer they're looking for)

Don't make the mistake of dividing 2709 miles by 412 miles and multiplying by $22.86 because it counts filling up when you arrive at your destination (which you don't have to do since you're already there).

I would multiply both sides by X. This would give me x^2 - 8 = 2x. I would then set everything equal to zero. x^2 -2x -8 = 0. You can then factor, graph, or use the quadratic equation to solve. I would probably factor or graph because those are the easiest for me. All will work just fine though. Since everyone else has already given an answer, I will say that there are two answers: x = 4 and -2.

Distance to be travelled=2709 miles
Dist. covered with one tank of gas=412 miles
Hence ,Tanks of gas reqd. for the whole journey=2709/412 =6.58 tanks of gas
Rate of one full tank of gas=$22.86
Total money to be spent=$22.86 x 6.58
=$150.42.. Ans

2709 - total miles
412 - miles so far
$22.86 - gas so far
x - total gas

x/2709 = 22.86/412
x = $150.31
