Why was there a Western beirut and an Eastern beirut.
It's still present nowadays. Christians live in the East, and Muslims in the West. Is it like the Berlin wall?

Yes, they did.
Why? Because the radical Muslims want to control everything, they have a habit of hating anyone who does not agree with them, especially anyone who would be allied with the Israelis.
If a separation of the neighborhoods keeps peace, then so be it, it's better than more fighting.

What a great question to start out my morning with.

Well Let's see, During the civil war you had 2 sides. Lebanon, syria VS. Palestinans, LNM (Lebanese national movement).

You had Al mourabitoun and Tawwhid movement these were main sunis. The biggest sunni organization that fought against the maronites, and christians was the PLO and al jabha el sha'abiyyeh.

Many events occured between sunnis vs. christians like karanatina, damour, tal el zaatar sabra & shatila etc...

There was a western and eastern beirut to split christian neigbourhoods from muslim ones. This way it would be easier for christians to target muslim militia's and vice versa/ It was a matter of geography. Nowadays it exists, but christians are not afriad to enter the west, nor are muslims afraid to enter the east.
that

Lebanon still has deep wounds from civil war. More than 100,000 people were killed, and 100,000 handicapped. 900,000 people, were displaced from their homes. quarter of a million emigrated permanently. Lots of land mines are still there in that area.

Yes, they fought ones against the others....it was a civil war among shiits, sunnies and christians.
Why?? Bcoz interests of politicians and stranger countries.
Yes.....you are right, still nowadays there are christians zones (keserwan, metn) and muslim zones (north, sunnies.;south shiits)
But...Why to bring the past here again?? Lebanon is a wounded country trying to close its wounds.
Let's support that, that way Lebanon can reach the level that had in the international concert of the world nations some years ago.
Adding hate and living in the past, never will be possible to cure the endurance.

PEACE

Did Sunnis fight Maronites in Lebanese civil war? YES.

To fully understand the so-called Lebanese "Civil" war,
don't listen to what your neighbour say, because your other neighbour will tell you something completely different.

but try to read these books:
Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War
http://www.amazon.com/Pity-Nation-Lebanon-at-War/dp/0192801309/
and
Pity the Nation: The Abduction of Lebanon
http://www.amazon.com/Pity-Nation-Abduction-Lebanon-Books/dp/1560254424
The title of the books says it all....
