Most of our troops are actually here in the US, so it's not really troop strength that is our weakness.

It's lack of manufacturing capacity.

During WWII, new types of vehicles, all kinds of supplies, and even new inventions made their way to the front lines within months, sometimes weeks, of the need being identified.

In Iraq, an invasion planned by Cheney since before 9/11, it took 3 1/2 YEARS, and in some cases still counting, to get reinforced trucks out to the troops. No new tech; just extra plates on the fenders.

All our bivouac, camping, and general supplies are made in China now. If China declared war on the US, it could outfit its own army (which is 3 times the size of ours) with the stuff ordered by the US!

If China wants to invade, I suggest we all learn Mandarin so we can read the surrender leaflets falling from the sky.

Our trops are not to thin. we still have hundred's of thousands located in bases in europe/ asia for exactly that reason.

The reason my son in the Army guard is being deployed is that we do not want to draw down our troop strength in regions that could be dangerous.

Now I would argue that we need more full time troops -but the truth is that congress does not have the balls to increase troop sizes and salaries or relocate them out of thier districts etc becuase it would mean that they have to cut spending somewhere else like earmarks or instead get rid of the excess useless bases located in their districts( I mean why do we need naval station in TN?? if not to generate money for the local economy?)

i think if a large country like china attacked america, we would enter another world war, and most likely we would nuke eachother out of existance.
