IUDs are more effective than birth control pills I know this because I've been doing research and talking to doctors about MIRENA for the past 3 weeks.
You can still get pregnant with an IUD but it's not good. The baby is very high risk of being deformed or miscarried. Often the body will reject the pregnancy in the early stages but if it doesn't than it's not going to be a good pregnancy.
IUD's pretty much abort any pregnancy that does occur.
The only reason I'm looking into it is because I'm only 20- I don't want a child until I'm 26 so a 5 year IUD is perfect!
I would suggest taking a test and if she is pregnant get her to the doctor ASAP because she'll need to get the IUD removed and then make sure the baby is okay but most likely since she has an IUD the pregnancy will be miscarried.

Yes, your wife can still get pregnant with an IUD in place. During the six months to a year after giving birth a female is EXTREMELY fertile, especially if she choses not to breastfeed (breastfeeding hinders ovulation which will stave off pregnancy for a while). Any birth control regardless of how effective has to have some time to actually store, if you will, enough horomones in her system to prevent pregnancy. Just as a side note, get a pregnancy test quick, because there are some risks with becoming pregnant with an IUD still in place, any time there is a suspicion. In any case, best of luck!

My mom got pregnant with me while having the IUD in. She didn't even know she was pregnant for 5 months. I came out just fine, but I'm not sure if they removed it or what. At that point though most of the damage would have been done I'd think...
Get the test and see, if it's positive then contact the doctor's office.

I have an IUD. Actually I have had it for about six years now. Other forms of birth control have not worked for me in the past but the IUD has. The swollen feeling is from the IUD. I get the same problem all the time.

Yes, absolutely. And what usually happens is that the baby ends up growing around the IUD. Although other posters claim that babies have been born along with IUDs, we were told by our doctor that it severely damages the fetus and that someone with pg with an IUD is recommended to terminate.....so I am highly skeptical of what i read above and my wife has never trusted an IUD as a result. An unplanned pregnancy is one thing...an irreparably damaged child as a result is not something we could live with.
The IUD could also have slipped and needs to be repositioned...and in rare cases, women have been known to be allergic to the materials that make up the IUD itself.
Even if the test is neg. she should see a doctor.

yes ! i had a friend years ago that got pregnant while using an iud, when she gave birth to her daughter the iud came out too ! it was very weird. one thing there is no 100% effective method of birth control, pills included...just read the facts concerning them. there are so many variables to birth control methods...human error being the top one. the only known 100% method is abstinence but then that wouldn't work very well for your marriage now would it? i would get a pregnancy test and then contact the doctor.

I think the statistics are something like 1 in 100 women will get pregnant within the first year, then it drops to 1 in 1,000 after that. It COULD happen. That's why I'm getting my tubes tied this time. lol Just pick up a test when you get off work and keep your fingers crossed. If you are pregnant, CONGRATULATIONS! We are at the very end of that same situation. It wasn't planned, but its a wonderful addition. Good Luck.

yes, it is not 99.9% effective. the failure rate is less then 1% a year so that makes it somewhere between 99.0 and 99.9 percent effective. Over a 10 year period the effective rate drops to 2-6% meaning that a larger sample group found it to be less effective over time. Get a pregnancy test..
