In a 30 gallon, you'd be better off to just have one adult pair. You can distinguish the males and females easily enough by the fin shape (males have long thin points to their dorsals) and red/orange tint to the abdomen of females. As long as the fish are 1 1/2 inches when you buy them they'll be old enough to spawn, even though they'll grow a good bit larger. They'll need a spawning cave, which can be conveniently made using a clay flowerpot (large enough for them to both fit into at the same time) turned on it's side at the bottom of the tank.

well 1st off a good rule of thumb is for every one inch a fish is you need to have one gallon of water. so if you have 30 one inch fishes you should have 30 gallons of water. 2nd make sure that you have the right temperture in your water. if the temp is not ideal for breeding then chances are they will not. 3rd have some sort of breeding grass so the babies can hide. transfer them to a different tank so that the bigger fish do not eat them. good luck....

try, but they might fight especially if they establish breeding pairs.
