For a few days the central air fan was grumbling, squeaking loudly etc. and today it finally quit altogether. I turned it off for awhile, then turned it back on and it began to turn slowly but then quit abruptly. So, is it more than likely the fan motor has died completely and if so how much do you think it's going to run me to fix? Thanks.

It is either the fan motor bearings have disintegrated or if you have one your fan drive belt is stuffed.
It is best to get a qualified A/C technician to check it out and fix.

Sounds like the bearings went ADIOS. Windings/brushes probably aren't in good shape either. If you're lucky, many small towns still have eletric motor repair shops. For about $100 or so they can put it back in shape for ya. If not, it can run between $150-$500 to replace depending on the rarity of the motor (I just paid nearly $500 for on at one of my rentals).

Are you talking about the fan motor outside on the compressor or the fan on the forced air furnace?

I replaced one outside on the compressor, and it was about 90 bucks. The forced air furnace motor will be more, a lot of them now are either 2 or 3 speed. good luck.

It could be the motor or just a a/c fuse.
Oh dear prices.....

Depending on the unit age, it could be a good investment to get a new one.
