Ruth. I agree war does polarize people. During the second world war most Americans were polarized, men fought women worked in the factories and rationing was nation-wide. Not so much after years in Vietnam and even less in Iraq. Maybe Americans know the difference between real wars and conflicts without achievable objectives.

Good question. Even after Pearl Harbor, Republicans were able to block a declaration of war against Germany until Hitler pulled the rug out from under them by declaring war on us.

We would have been a lot less prepared, and probably wouldn't have gotten involved.

There would have been no Civilian Construction Corps to pump up our infrastructure, feed and exercise a large number of young men up to full strength and give them a taste of military discipline.

There would have been no Lend Lease to ramp up War Production so that our own forces could be built up and equipped quickly in 1942.

There would have been no Strategic Materials Embargo on Japan. and thus, no Pearl Harbor. The Japs attacked us, not because they thought we'd be a pushover, but because the embargo was so effective that they were already losing the war with China.

We would probably have ended up, not as an axis state, but an unallied partner, like Turkey and Spain.

The Russians still would have kicked his ***. But without, support, they would have had to negotiate a peace.

After Britain fell, Hitler would have invited us to annex Canada as a bribe and to ensure that the British Resistance wouldn't have outside help. The Japs would have gotten Australia.

It was a much closer thing than people think. Only Roosevelt's massive popularity and charisma kept it from going down that way.

I think we wouldn't have been so buddy buddy with the mass murdering Soviets. We would have allowed the whole of Germany to surrender to the United States. We would have beaten Communism then and there.

I think if we FDR OR Reagan here today, our nation would look just like it does now.

I'm sure it did then. We only have the history given to us. War polarizes people. It is scary. People die and Americans don't like it.

The US would have been in the war, long before Pearl Harbor. Chances are our military would not have been caught off guard. Remember, it's the Republicans who are supposed to be war mongers.
