I am planning on breast feeding but my mother in law just raised a very good point that should I run into problems I should have at least one can around so I or someone else doesn't have to run out at 3 am or find an open store on a holiday. This is probably the one area I haven't really read up about yet. So ladies who use formula, which brand do you prefer? Also, how long does an unopened tin stay good for, and how do you store, how long do you keep an opened tin for?

Thanks!!

Actually I am in Canada, but I can see how my spelling might confuse some people, LOL

I still nurse my baby, but use formula from time to time. When my daughter was born, she was given Enfamil in the hospital when she showed signs of jaundice. We have used that as a supplement to breastmilk when my supply has been low or I've had to work late, etc. It has been nice to have that option available to us. Sign up online & Enfamil sends you all kinds of freebies: coupons, samples, pamphlets on baby development, even a diaper bag. The hospital sent a can of Enfamil home with us, along with bottles of pre-mixed formula. It's worked out well for this working momma! Good luck with your breastfeeding...it can be tiring and time-consuming sometimes but there is absolutely nothing in the world like it!

I prefer Nestle Goodstart. An unopened can can stay good for awhile. The expiration date is on the can. It should tell you on the can. i have cans that expire in a year that are unopened.....

storing: store cans at room temperature. After opening the can, keep tightly covered, store in dry area and use contents within 1 month. Do not freeze powder and avoid excess heat.

if you are not going to be using formula that often and you don't want to waste any of it from opening a big can and then throw away, I recommend buying the formula singles or the cans that are concentrated. They much smaller and are only 2-3 dollars per can.

I am guessing that you are in Britain. Ask your doc whether you need with or without iron, but generally any brand name is fine. In the US, all the store brands are made by the same company, but I don't know the scoop there. Just buy the smallest tin of powdered formula. You can also ask others if the hospital gives out free formula with your going home pack. In that case, you don't need to buy any until you've used that up. Most breastfeeding mothers generally didn't need to buy any until they went back to work or until decided to quit breastfeeding because the hospital supply was enough.

I agree with the person who said it makes it tempting to give up breastfeeding.

However, when I started formula I used Similac Advance - it was recommended by our ped and is what the NICU used to supplement our first-born (he spent 1 wk in the hospital for an infection).

An unopened can has an expiration date, but an opened can has to be used within 30 days.

Similac or Enfamil. An unopened tin will have an expiration date on it. Store it in a cool/dry place - the cupboard (as long it's powder formula). You're hospital will update you on all this info you need to know.

I actually did not even think i would need formula... i had to give her suplements in the hospital.... i did not have enough milk... in the nursery they have many bottles, i just kept making my friends, family and husband to the nursery to get "a couple bottles" i ended up taking home alot... i used nestle good start supreme for 7 months...

BUT... i found out somehting horrid in a very shocking but true way...

i am sure you have heard of the problem of early puberty... where young children (even infants) can start developing early... well my 7 month old daughter started growing hairs in her feminine area... i was told once it starts it cant stop... the doctor was going to refer me to a specailist who would prescribe my 7 MONTH old daughter "ANTI-HORMONES!!!"

i went home and did my research... there is alot of hormones in formula... soy AND milk based...

I now make my own home made formula with organic products...

since then the doctor has been confused as to WHY she is not longer developing early... she is now 1 years old... healthy and strong... (my doc does not know bout the homemade formula) My sister was very ill and was put on this formula... it helped her as well...

if anyone wants ANY more info... about anything (including the recipe) please e-mail me

j.dimare@gmail.com

good luck to you all...

(oh... i keep a can of the organic formula in the house just in case i am not home and someone needs to give her a bottle...)

Go to the websites of any formula brand you can think of and sign up for their free offers. I formula feed my son and I used the samples that were sent to me for the first two months.

I was always told to start with the cheapest brand and if your baby does well with it then you save a lot of money. They all have what your baby needs in them. but i used Similac Advance before i knew about this. but when i tried to switch to a cheaper brand my baby got fussy. so you should think about the price before you start something. she is 6 months old now and i switched to a cheaper brand again and she did better.

They will send you home with some when you deliver the baby. I breastfed too, but kept it around just in case. There is an expiration date on the can.
