If given the opportunity - a spider will run a mile from you unless you have it cornered. Most spiders on the planet are harmless and even the majority that bite will cause localised swelling (which will disappear after a few hours or days).

Spiders are very good at detecting two things - food and threat and if they can't eat you (sorry - we are a little bit too big) will try to warn you off - whether that be by an adopted stance or by colouration.

Use the Internet to learn about the range of local spiders and find out something of their behaviour and also which are potentially dangerous. Try to focus on the fact that the spider won't attack you unless you directly threaten it.

If a spider bites you, the effect (if any) of its venom will always be quick - the spider is looking to incapacitate its prey fast. There will be lots of Internet-based information available on those that are fatal to human - just don't develop a phobia about them - they are really quite beautiful from a purely architectural point of view and they are also very fragile. (also very very fast)

Don't have sleepless nights

Like the others said, the Brown Recluse is dangerous as a Black Widow, or other venomous spiders. My girlfriend borrowed my car (Mind you it was February in Detroit) and one crawled out of the heat vent and bite her! Two days later her arm was swollen to the size of a small watermelon and she was in the hospital 5 times to drain the puss and poison out of her arm. She was the example to the interns for 4 different poison control specialist doctors (whatever they're called).

So if you are bite check to find out what it was and if not sure go to your doctor and if it starts swelling bad head for the ER right away!!!!

It very much depends on the variety of spider. Not to creep you out or anything but here's a link to a site with photos of spider bites :p

I am especially careful around where the Brown Recluse Spider might be living.

Hi, You'd find out rel fast ,if you were bitten by a Black Widow, or one of those Brown Recluse(spelled wrong,I'm sure) My sister was bitten by a Black Widow. It was carried in on the back of her dog, and in the middle if the night it crawled onto the bed and bit her on the arm. She said her arm started stinging, and she went to rub it,felt something there and turned on the light to see.(she was asleep) She saw the Black Widow, and tried to pull it off,but it bite her so hard that it was stuck on her with its fangs. She finally yanked it off ,and she spent a week in I.C.U.,and almost died! So my Deary, don't think spiders aren't dangerous,it just depends on if there poisonous! Kill All Black Widows with Heavy Duty Spray Glue, than Spray them With Spider Spray! You can tell a Black Widows Web, because it has no shape to it! All other spiders make some type of design to their web! Bye
