It was a loose form of Federalism where each State pretty much ran its own affairs. Much like the current confederation model of Canada or Switzerland. But, it led to problems regarding a unified currency, foreign policy and defense capabilities. So, after the convention of 1789, it was replaced by the current constitution and a tighter form of Federalism.

Essentially each State retained its ancient charters & conventions and agreed to support one another in war and dire contingencies but otherwise not meddle in each other's affairs. Arguably the Article of Confederation might have been hammerd into a workable arrangement but a loud group demanded a Federal Government...
