I've been a waitress/bartender for years while I work through college and there is nothing more disappointing after working so hard to please a table and they leave something under 15%. Many people from older professionals to blue collar or college students seem not to be aware that an acceptable tip is between 15-25%. The pay-rate for waitstaff is around $2.15 an hour so we rely on the gratuity of what we sell. I wish I could educate the world on this!

$2.15 ! That is robbery /slavery.
I am so sorry to hear that.
As for your question, no, tipping and other social graces are not taught in most schools, and maybe it should be. Parents should teach their children by example as the kids are growing up.

I have seen this question in many advice columns and having two daughters -in -law that are professional servers, I can relate to your chagrin. There are many businesses that have given out tip guides as advertising gimiks. Perhaps your employer could have some bussiness cards made up with a tip guide on the back. If they will not do this, perhaps you can go on the net and have some made up yourself, Vistaprint will do the first batch and just charge for postage and handling. Good luck! PS even if I get lousey service I never leave less than 10%ost of my servers will get at least 20%.

Sorry to say this BUT some people like myself are on a tight budget and cant leave "15-25%" so id suggest finding a job in which you dont rely on tips to pay your rent or schooling, no offence!

I learned how to tip from my parents, because they took us out to eat all the time. Most young people and college students do not know how to tip because it was one of those things that are not taught in schools.

There should be classes in etiquette, tipping and common sense.

If you want, you could always refer people to the website listed below, which describes the history of tipping and how to tip.

But your establishment should list the percentage of tip on all their checks for their guests.
