i cant believe no one has said this yet. all these answers are the books everyone expects and i hate that.
i looooove faerie tale stories so i found an author that writes exactly that for teens
Holly Black is that author and she has written three books
1) Tithe about a girl who finds out that she is really a faerie and falls in love with a faerie prince. it sounds cheesey but its written soooo good i could not put it down
2) Ironside which is the sequal to Tithe. it follows the faerie girl again and now she must fight a faerie queen. its soooo good and it just came out like 3 months ago
3) Valient. this is also a book that deals with someone who encounters faeries when she runs away from home in the city.
these books are not the norm faerie books the creatures here are dangerous and evil and the main characters are right in the middle of it all.
they are young adult novels so you would find them in the youth section of barns and noble i bought all three and now im waiting for her to finish her fourth!!!

Misty of Chicoteague by Marguerite Henry was my favorite at that age. And the story is basicly true I've been to Chicotegue and met Misty! We went there on vacation every summer as a child! It's and old book but still a good read
Dragon Riders of Pern series by Ann McCaffery there are about 20 different series all with the same characters. Start with the Dragon Riders and go from there. There is a list of the order they suggest you read them in

i suggest Tamora Peice's books. she is an excellent fantasy writer. Her first series, The Lioness series, is the best. I suggest you start with those and then go to the Immortals series, the the Protecter of the Small series, then the Trickster's series (Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen), and end with the Circle Opens qaurtet.
Christopher Paloni is also a good fantasy writer, although his books have more fighting. Eragon and Eldest are his two books.
Another writer is Steven Brust. He writes about a man named Vlad Taltos and the adventures he and his jhereg (pronounced zu reg, its a poisonous miniture of a dragon) venture through. It is a pg 13 book because of the language used. this is an older writer.
Alphabet of Thorns is a good book, i can't rember who its by
Prophecy of the Stones is another recommendation. Again, i can't remember the author.

I would say A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. It's a great series for all ages (I'm 16, and I loved it), and it was a fun trip the whole way through, always promising something new. Something for a bit older age would be the Hitman series by Lawrence Block. Whilst not "action" or "adventure", it's more of a struggling hitman going through a mid-life crisis. This series is what I am currently working on. Good luck!

Well, I am fourteen and just finished What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones. She also wrote One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies. Both are really good!!! I am now reading A Child Called It. Another great read.
You might like Inkheart. I never finished it but the amount that I did was really good.

I suggest Tamora Pierce, and Hilari Bell. All of Tamora Pierce's books are high fantasy with only a little true 'action' at the climax. Hilari Bell's A Matter of Profit, is fantasy/sci-fi and has little action, and her Goblin Wood is very good, too.
