I have a 2002 Mercedes C230K. Smartkey was working perfectly until a few months ago. Now it doesn't like to lock or unlock my doors, especially from the driver's side. Works better from passenger side (when holding the SmartKey right next to the door handle), but still doesn't work 100% of the time. I replaced the batteries, which didn't fix the problem. Even worse, if I can't get it to unlock with the SmartKey, I have to manually unlock, which sets off the alarm. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Unlike most cars using infra-red receivers, a Smartkey mainly uses a frequency signal with infra-red as a secondary function.
What this means is, you should not have to point this key at the car at all if things are working correctly.
When you press the unlock button on your key it sends a signal which is to be detected by an internal antenna that is mounted to the upper left (driver side) of the rear window.
Point your key at this point of your rear window and see if this helps you for the time being.

The componants that could cause the problem you describe are expensive to just take a shot at but my first guesses are the key itself and the antenna I mentioned above.

Do you have a second key to try? If not I would get a key first as you should have a spare anyway.
If not resolved the car will have to have it's codes read at a dealer, like I said the price of guessing the part it needs is too high.

Also- To check the battery of a Smartkey press a lock or unlock button and a small red led below left of the panic button will light up if battery is good.

I have a C230K as well. It's def. something to do with your sensor. It should be able to pick up the signal when you push the unlock or lock button when your near the Benz. I've never had a problem. I have even pushed locked when another car is blocking my Benz and it's locked. Check back with the dealership and tell them that it is faulty. There's no point in having to hear the alarm every time you open your own vehicle.

Did you recently change cell phone providers? try turning off the phone and use smart key? And after a few moisture attacks on the key it might not perform as it used to. Buy a couple new keys and reprogram them. I know it is expensive. But a Mercedes Benz owner setting off his car alarm isn't embarrassing. And remove the batterys tape the old keys to identify them as bad do not use them unless just to open the door to get at your good key.

it could be the sensor in the door going bad on it,that will cause this to happen to it,and it wont work right all the time, the fact that it works any at all, does indicate a sensor going bad,you can have the dealer check this out, those sensors aren't that expensive to replace,it will probably get worse on it as time goes by,but id have it checked, good luck with it.

It's probably the key itself. Unfortunately, your only source for a new key is the dealer. Don't waste your money on a second hand key from e-bay, they can't be reprogrammed.

Sensor on the car or dirty contacts on the battery clips.
