While TVs must be the same aspect ratio as the HD signals being sent which are 16:9, LCD monitors arn't really designed with TV in mind so they can use their own aspect ratio, and after testing, they decided on 16:10 because you can read 2 full pages of text side by side on 16:10 not on 16:9

No real good reason.

The HDTV standards were defined as 16:9 before LCD TVs and widescreen monitors became popular.

LCD monitor resolutions are defined by the panel manufacturers and they want to get the most panels out of a single piece of glass. So that is going to depend on the size and the aspect ratio of both the mother glass and the panel.
