As others have said, the cost is in the initial equipment and fish. Generally speaking the tank will use no more power than a television set.

it is really cheap if you have the right equipment. tank prices vary and the appropriate filter too. the fish are pretty cheap cause you can get tetras that are about $2 a fish. you might need a small heater( this will cost you like $5/month on electricity). the electricity on the filter will be the same as the electricity of a lightbulb.

You have to pay for the tank, the light, the air pump, the filters, and the heater. You also have to pay for the chemicals.... It is an expensive hobby but if done properly it can be fun.... Oh! don't forget about the fish and they run between $25 to $75....

Yup, Very much so... I have a 300 gallon Reef tank with the whole Sha-bang of equiptment and 975 Watt metal halide lighting, heater, pump, chiller, skimmer, bubble maker, filter, uv sterilizer ,etc. and our monthly power bill is roughly $800 a month! its an expensive hobby thats for sure!

Not really. The most expensive part is getting started with all the equipment that you need to purchase. Electricity is minimal unless you plan on having lots of tanks.

my mother pays a 1k elec bill and is only here 3 months of the year. the bill pays for the freezer, fridge and pumps for the fish so yes, very bloody expensive.

for me when i get one fish i want more but i like puffer fishes so i have to get new tanks every time. now i have 6 tank 3 i dont use filter cause i have a betta. madly its good to get a betta the only thing you need is a light

Well, it is expensive if you use a water pump. Why not put water plants instead. It will save you tons. Although, there is the troublesome of changing the water plants every so often.
