What is Holden Caulfield's religion?

He describes himself as an atheist, but I seem to remember that he was sent to many prep/private schools, which leads me to believe his family was religious. Was he raised catholic? It seems like his family is catholic. He seems to know a lot about the bible. Not to be stereotypical, but being in that area, New York, the catholic religion seems to be a predominant religion there.

if this is a question for school, the question might be getting at, not what his actual organized religion is, but rather what it is that he values most.

so think about that: what does he hold most dear? what philosophy, what state of being, does he think it most important or valuable in this world?

i'll give you a hint: you can find it in the speech he makes that gives the book its title.

I think he has protestant background but I do not remember his own thoughts about it. I think he is not totally an atheist. It was so long ago I read that book!
