He believes in Jesus, but is unsure of the other stories in the Bible. Like many other teens, he is searching for absolute answers.
"Holden says that he, in some ways, is "an atheist" . He sometimes prays to Jesus, and yet other times he feels like he just cannot pray because of his likes, dislikes, and indifferent views of the church. Teens sometimes feel that not all information on a particular religion is completely true. Holden feels that the information on Jesus is probably true, but he is a little suspicious of the Disciples and other characters from the Bible."

He describes himself as an atheist, but I seem to remember that he was sent to many prep/private schools, which leads me to believe his family was religious. Was he raised catholic? It seems like his family is catholic. He seems to know a lot about the bible. Not to be stereotypical, but being in that area, New York, the catholic religion seems to be a predominant religion there.

if this is a question for school, the question might be getting at, not what his actual organized religion is, but rather what it is that he values most.
so think about that: what does he hold most dear? what philosophy, what state of being, does he think it most important or valuable in this world?
i'll give you a hint: you can find it in the speech he makes that gives the book its title.

I think he has protestant background but I do not remember his own thoughts about it. I think he is not totally an atheist. It was so long ago I read that book!

I would say he believes in God but doesn't really want to pursue the religion.

He's probably a nominal Christian, but it isn't relevant to the story.

I don't think it is ever mentioned in the book. He's not a very religious guy, is he?
