In the 70's, hitch hiking was very common and accepted. I used to hitch the 5mi. to college every am. Was never late. On weekends sometimes my brother and I would grab some beer and pot and head out to the interstate pick up a hitcher and take a road trip. Those were the days. But now? Not a chance.

I took a trip to Michigan one summer. I had just left a town called Bruce Crossings, when I came across two women with 3 kids and a dog standing next to an obviously broken down car.

I also had a dog with me, and, other than the dog, I was traveling alone. My car was large enough for all of us to fit in, and it turned out they were headed for Marquette, which was where I was going.

I took them in, and I drove them all the way home, which turned out to be quite a long way to go. We sang songs, and talked and told jokes.

It was really quite the experience. I'm not sure if I would do the same now, but at the time? I was sure it was right, and I have never regretted it.

No-but several picked me up, I got on the freeway, to hitch to the next exit, a trucker picks me up, & says "I'm going to Las Vegas, where are you headed?" I was almost speechless, (by the time he had his rig in gear, he had to slow down & let me off)-This happened in Salt Lake City.

Sure. Well, with distress situations anyway. Absolutely when I see someone with a car with a flat or broken down, I always check to see if I can help or call someone. (If they don't have a cell phone).
With flats, I'll help change them.
