There are many rock bands from the 50s that pre-date the Beatles yet have fallen from the eyes of musical history. I don't know if anyone could accurately answer your question.
If you're asking about bands that still exist and perform music together, that would probably be the Rolling Stones.

Bill Haley and the Comets--"Shake, Rattle and Roll" (1954); I'm going to guess Bill Haley. I imagine there were some groups playing that style slightly before him that just never got popular, possibly some rhythm & blues artists.
