As said above, there are security systems which work but even the best can only deter theft, not prevent it. Many new cars have inbuilt security measures which the thieves either know a way around or they avoid that model and pick an easier target. Problem with fitting an aftermarket security sysytem is the thieves may not notice what is fitted and may damage the car trying to get into it. But in the end if they want to take your car or bike or whatever away, they only have to observe how the police remove illegal or badly parked cars. Next time you see a truck towing a car which has been hitched up on a lift ramp or hoisted onto the little frames they use sometimes, even if the car flashers are on and the alarm is sounding, do you think of this as a thief in action or another police towaway? Once they have your car in a secure garage somewhere they can dismantle it at their leisure. I am afraid technology will never defeat the thieves.

There are security systems that work.
Modern car security systems are so good that if a thief wants your car he'll break in to your house to get the key - most houses are easier to get into without the key than most new cars.
Modern tracking devices are also effective for recovering cars when they are stolen, but they are expensive (usually a one-off charge for buying and fitting it, and then an annual fee for the subscription to the service).
The cars that get stolen are either:
Stolen to order, by specialist gangs, who will do whatever is necessary to get they keys, then take the car undamaged.
or
Older cars, with out-of-date security technology that the theft community has had long enough to work out how to defeat, and which are not valuable enough (or owned by rich enough people) to have tracking devices, and which are usually stolen either for a one-off trip then abandoned, or stripped for parts. There is demand for second-hand parts for older cars (as people with older cars often can't afford new parts, or can't justify the price of new parts when the car is worth so little), which is not there for newer cars, so there is more incentive as well as more opportunity to steal older cars.

When people steal cars, they usually take it because they want a specific part of the car. So, after the car is stolen, it's usually taken apart so that the valuable parts can be sold for some good cash.

No, (I don't have a car) but there is a possibility gas can be stolen because of the price changes.

Just because they are crooks, doesn't mean that they are stupid. You can compare it to the hackers out there. They are extremely sharp when it comes to computers, they could help the system, instead, they choose to tear it down, just to show that they can. You can design a system and it will work for a while, but sooner or later, someone will figure out a way to defeat it. It's a game to some people.

Hi , the simple answer is, the thief's will always find a way! what you need to ask yourself is could everyone work a secure system on a car? some are really complicated and they need to be user friendly. Its a challenge to some thief's to steal a car that's supposedly hard to steal thanks martyn,
