Went to see Transformers last night. 19.50 for 2 people. I dont bother buying snacks or drinks because those prices are just as outrageous. And to top it off, I have to sit through stupid commercials before the movie starts. If I want to watch that crap I would sit at home. How can the prices be so much, and yet they now have ads before and during the movie (I.E Mountain Dew in Transformers for example). This country is really becoming a huge scam. Everything is strictly to make the rich get richer.

Every thing is expensive. The movie theater has to pay rent or taxes. Electric, gas, inventory, Payroll, Insurance. Add it together and thats why so many business go out of business.

They have to balance the cost of the movie rental (paid to the studios per film per showing per time of rental by day) with what they can make from an average week of people going to the theater--that pretty much sets the base price that they have to work with for the year.

The ad ons for food are where they make the extra money that gets them through the slow times when no good movies are drawing people to the movie theaters (they have to stay in business you know). Even movie theaters pay rental for being there, or if they own the building they have to pay property tax and upkeep, replace damaged stuff, and fees for licensing as well as pay their staff/employees.

Showing previews and ads--the previews try to get people interested in coming back soon. The ads are just because you're a captive audience and can't get away yet they can't start the movie immediately because people are usually still filtering in after being in line for food. I hate ads too, and they didn't used to show those at all. What you can do is make a point of complaining to the management you didn't want to see advertisements. Don't complain to the employees, they can't do anything about it. Management has to listen though, if enough people complain, they generally rethink a policy.

The theaters make very little money off of the movies themselves, with just about 95% of all ticket revenues going back to the studios. The main sources of revenue for the theaters themselves has always been at the concession stand (so that's where your outrageous prices come in), and now additionally from ad revenues made from all the damn commercials that play before (and during) the previews.

And they wonder why movie attendance rates are falling, while DVD rentals/sales are going through the roof...

The commercials is the best part. I like to see what is coming soon to the theaters. We have 3 movie places and 1 is called movies 10 and thats only a dollar to see.

Agreed! I have a problem tolerating sitting for extended periods, so if I can go to a movie..I want to see the dang movie! I do NOT want to sit through the same dang ads I see on my dang TV....dang it all!!! And don't get me started on the dang snack prices...dang it!!

(I do understand the revenue side of the concessions but still...dang it...they're pushing it!)
