I was married for 43 years until my wife died. It was a different time. Marriage meant a life time commitment. Things have changed. When I hear youngsters talking about the fact that we can always get a divorce if things don't work out; and I read that 50% per cent of marriages end in divorce I wonder .

I think it's a wonderful institution, and doesn't deserve to be maligned like it has just because some people don't know how it's supposed to work. No one proposes that friendships be dissolved just because some people don't know how a friendship is supposed to work.
It's quite simple really. If one puts aside ones own selfish desires, and devotes those energies to fulfilling the other person's, and all will be returned. If both parties are on the same page, stand back and watch the magic happen.
Call me a starry-eye fool, but I still believe.

I think there is absolutely nothing in it for a man to get married that he cannot have by remaining unmarried. Women like it because should the marriage end, they get half of everything.

For people who grew up in stable, reasonable families, marriage can be a very satisfying partnership.
Unfortunately, it's hard to get more out of a partnership than you are capable of bringing into it. Those of us who were born into crazy, abusive, totally dysfunctional families tend to choose partners who are likely to abuse us in the same way our families did. We're just not attracted to normal people.
For us, staying single often turns out to be the best choice.
