I would drain some, the problem is, especially with smaller engines, that if you overfill the crank case the bottom of the main crank will splash into the oil aerating it, and air is not a very good lubricant.

After running it and letting it cool down for a few hours check the oil, if still above the full limit drain some out (I say this because the filter can hold up to 1/2 qt) Being overfilled is not good for the ability to pump oil as to where it is needed

I've watched the local Toyota over fill my 4-cyl. Camry by .4 of one quart every time I have it changed. When the warranty's up I'll be doing it myself. The dipstick shows less than .090 over the full mark. That little is not going to hurt. A quart over is asking for disaster as the counterweights on the crankshaft will make a milkshake of your motor oil filling it with foam (air bubbles).
There is an alternative little twist you may find interesting. The Guys at your Local NAPA store will easily be able to find a deeper (more capacity) oil filter that will fit if you have adequate clearance. This little extra capacity will allow the extra 1/2 quart to fill to the full mark only. Their filters are made by Wix and you will find that it's a better filter than the Motorcraft (made by purolater) filters you've been using.

Although I am not an engine guy, I am a tranny guy and have been around cars all my life, this is not normal and you do have to find out where that oil is going. Does it have a puddle under it in the morning? Does it drip after you drive it for a while? Is there signs underneeth of oil running down anywhere and blowing back (meaning, is it leaking while you drive it?) How is your antifreeze in the radiator? bright green or dirty? Do not check radiator after you have driven the vehicle, it must be cooled down before you open the cap. hope this helps.

Most cars hold 4qt from my experience? If 4.5qt was already 1/2 qt. high, you may want to drain some. Otherwise 1/2 qt. over is probably OK.

you can do as much harm, having to much oil as you do by not having enough. It would be best to drain it off.
