Why is it that in Ohio, everyone in a vehicle is permitted to wear a seat-belt, but cyclists can wear sandals, no shirt, shorts, and worst of all, no helmet??? Are they crazy?

Riley, you are correct on one thing, T.B.'s facts are wrong. Helmets are not tested at 14 MPH, they're tested at 13 MPH. I have read from several different sources that it is 13 MPH. I also read a study where the researcher contacted various helmet manufacturers (including popular names everyone has heard of) and asked if their helmet meets or exceeds the 13 MPH test. None of the companies answered yes. Most just skirted around the question and said they meet D.O.T. tests. This should tell you something. Each rider needs to decide for themselves to wear or not to wear a helmet. I also agree with Crash's response above. I too enjoy and prefer to ride without a shirt or a helmet when the temperatures soar into the 90s and 100s and have been riding this way for years. It really isn't anyone's business what I choose to wear or not wear. Do you really think that t-shirt most riders wear is going to protect you from road rash? I don't think so. If you ride and want to wear a leather coat, gloves, helmet and all the rest when it's 90 and 100 degrees out, go right ahead, but don't tell me what I should wear, including a shirt or a helmet. This is still a free country, isn't it?

Why do you care? Are you going to pay the medical bills? I ride, and I wear a helmet and jacket most of the time, but I do enjoy going without. I am sure you have never been on a motorcycle in your life, give it a try. If I hit the pavement at 65mph the helmet and jacket won't do much anyway. with helmet or without this is a risk I bet most of us bikers would take so get over it!

I live in Ohio and can't remember ever seeing a rider without a shirt or with sandals on. I don't wear a helmet most of the time because I don't want to.If people in cars wore helmets they would also be safer in an accident,There are no laws against wearing a helmet in a car so maybe you should get one for each rider in your car.Or maybe you should worry about yourself and not what other people choose to do.

Because while a cyclist is permitted to wear the same clothing as a person in a vehicle, they are also permitted to not wear the same.

Perhaps we should all wear the same clothing, and steel toe boots as well.
Do unto others as you would have done unto you.
This can be expressed many ways:
If you tell me how to dress, you should dress likewise.
If you place a restriction on me, you should live with the same restriction.

Not crazy, just ignorant of the facts. (Stick foot on mouth here)
"The helmets are mounted on a 5-kilo (11 pound) magnesium headform and then dropped from a controlled height onto a variety of test anvils to simulate crash impacts on various surfaces and shapes. In the real world, your helmet actually hits flat pavement more than 85 percent of the time."
And....
"The helmets are dropped, using gravity to accelerate the helmet to a given speed before it smashes onto a test anvil bolted to the floor. By varying the drop height and the weight of the magnesium headform inside the helmet, the energy level of the test can be easily varied and precisely repeated. As the helmet/headform falls it is guided by either a steel track or a pair of steel cables. That guiding system adds friction to slow the fall slightly, so the test technician corrects for this by raising the initial drop height accordingly.

The headform has an accelerometer inside that precisely records the force the headform receives, showing how many Gs the headform took as it stopped and for how long."

See they really don't care about speed, it's all about the G's and if your brain takes more than it can handle you are dead.

ps I really don't care what anyone does or doesn't wear.

Edit: Biker Bob, You got me too thinking so I followed my own advise and did some more checking. The highest speed that they list for the impact test is 13.7 mph. So my apoligies to TB. But still speed isn't the issue during the test. It's about weather or not the helmet liner will slow down your head during a crash and how many G's your noggin will see compared to how many it can stand.
I don't know if the 13 mph used is scaled up to a higher speed for reporting purposes or not nothing I found said so.
As far as what anyone besides myself wears while riding, I said it above, I don't really care. Just find the facts if your going to post them up.
Ride safe.

There is no shirt made that will save your life. No one should mandate any safety equipment for anyone else no matter what their mode of transport. Helmet laws ARE a joke the D.O.T. test on a helmet is done at 14 mph. Many states that require a helmet read something like rider and passenger must wear a D.O.T. helmet. It does not say the helmet must be on the head or fastened. The only safety device I need is my own common sense. If more people had any common sense we would not need any safety regs. to protect you from yourself.

no we have accepted our mortality and choose to enjoy life, motorcycles are not safe but they are fun. there is nothing you can do that will save your life YOU ARE GOING TO DIE even if you stay home and hide under the bed. I for one enjoy riding more without a shirt or helmet & have been riding that way for 50 years actually more than that but I got my license in 57. you will enjoy life more if you quit worrying about getting hurt & dieing I suggest you do that and leave the rest of us alone as your interference in our lives could be bad for your health.

are u on the back of my bike? are u riding my bike? no? then dont worry about it. if i choose not to have a lid in a state that makes it optional, that's up to me, not u.
as far as the other things, i never ride without my boots, long pants, leather jacket and leather gloves. the risk of being lid-free is my choice and i accept what might happen if i go down.....but god help u if u were the cause of me going down and i get back up. i wont care if u are a girl, i will stomp yer lights out.

True, no shirt can save you life. The way I see it, if your going down, the shirt thing is not too important. Your head is. About a month ago, I witnessed a fatal accident. I was first on the scene. The guy was dead and his eyes were open. He was looking at me while I was taking his pulse. Not pretty.

He was wearing gloves, chaps, jacket, boots,.....and no helmet. If anyone starts grasping at letters of the law or insignificant little facts to make people think that helmets are not importnant, then I say go fu*k yourself. I'm wearing a helmet. My choice.
