There are programs that allow you to look at deleted files. The way computer works is that when you erase a file you don't really erase it. What you do is erase a pointer to the file. All a pointer does is tell the computer where the file is located and not to write over it. So, it is possible to read delete files. The caveat is that the more you use your computer the more likely it is for that deleted file to be erase. Also, you need special software to do it. But most importantly is that you have to know what to look for. I mean out of the thousands of files in a computer which file am I supposed to read. Is different when the authorities are doing an investigation because they are looking for specific things. Not just some random file. Remember the authorities already know that the perpetrator is a criminal and probably has evidence of the crime in his/her computer. Who in hell knows what letter you have written to whom and what is about. For example, if you told somebody a joke. The person spying on you must be looking for a joke. OR run across a joke by accident. The spy must know that a joke have been told to someone by the use of a computer in order to look for it.

That being said a spy program is different than a recovery program like the one described above. Different spy programs record different things. some record keystrokes, other record websites visited etc etc. More importantly is who installed the software. The software must be installed with the authorization of the owners computer. For example, your boss can install or have somebody install a spy program in any computer that belong to the company. However, they cannot install a program in your home personal computer since it belongs to you. They can monitor activity if you use their servers but not if you pay for your own internet connection. There are laws and regulations. To answer your question, the spy program will look at things after it was installed. More importantly the program just record things. Interpretation of what the program finds has to be done by a human being. For example, if you look at a picture of the statue of David by michael Angelo. Is that picture pornography or art. It depends who you ask. A computer however, cannot make that distinction. It cannot say, ok the picture was of David's face only as opposed to the hole statue especially the genitals.

You can use a Linux Live CD if you are afraid someone is spying on you. If a spy program is in operation, then they can track and trace everything - including your credit card details if you ever used them online. Keystrokes will only have been recorded after program installation, but a remote access program will let them scour your data stores for older data.

Access only to what you write/do after the spy program installation is possible. The FBI and CIA have programs that can find EVERYTHING you EVER did on the computer ... so be careful and don't break any laws (i.e. child porn).

Usually the kind of spy program you refer to, records keystrokes. Hence, it would give them access to anything you've written after the program was installed.. That said, once they have access to your email, they can get into the account and read your old mail, or sent mail if it's saved.

neither, they can't just come in and install something on your computer, i like to hack a bit but completly legally. Just make sure you check your computer every once in a while for viruses. They can't access files you write on your computer, if you had a website they could access and hack your site but never your computer, hope this helped =]

Normally, you're infected with spywares from internet.

You can install the latest Yahoo toolbar for your browser with anti spy button. I believe it's a very good function for everyone to clean spywares.
