It depends what you're looking for. The classics, Monopoly, Clue (Cluedo in the UK) and Careers (also by MB games) are good starters.

We are a large family who enjoy gaming together and have always loved a game called 'Ocean Trader' which involves players sailing ships around a basic world map, buying and selling goods for profit. Its simple but long.

If your children are older (10+ at a rough guess) try 'Settlers of Cataan' it's probably the best game ever. The basics are easily grasped and every game is different. It is for three or four players and the aim is to reach 10 'victory points'. The beauty of this is that play builds to a conclusion, once gained, you cannot lose Victory points. This means it can always be played in an evening after supper whereas games like Monopoly can go on for days if you are unlucky. Hope this helps

Take a look on www.boardgamegeek.com. There are a lot of recommendations for good family games. 'Euro'-style board games are excellent for families, and a websearch should bring up a number of companies (Brettspiel, Days of Wonder, Hans un Gluck, Fantasy Flight...)

As for games themselves, I enjoy 'Ticket to Ride,' 'Cleopatra,' 'Shadows Over Camelot,' and any of the 'Carcassonne' titles. I think they are strong games, interesting without being overly complex, and good for a group of people.

I've found that 'Settlers of Cataan' can be too complex for some people, but it can be good for older, strategy-minded children.

Also, look online for a good gaming store near you. Many will have store copies for you to look through and try. You should also be able to try out some of these games online.
