We are renting a house and the gas range is in the middle of the house & has no vent hood. Will there be a carbon monoxide problem? Is it expensive to have one installed?

NO! A vent/hood is not necessary for a gas stove. My gas stove is in the middle of my kitchen and I have no hood. There are no poisonous fumes from my stove in the home and there are also no oil or other cooking stains on the ceiling above my stove. I've lived here for over 10 years and the stove was installed a few years before I moved in.

No carbon monoxide problem. The only thing you will notice is that grease/oil that comes off the stovetop will go to the ceiling. A hood that vents outside will be a couple hundred dollars. Not removable when you leave.

I have a gas stove and it has an exhaust fan and hood over the appliance. However I did learn that most shoot the air into the kitchen. Really effective ones vent to the outside. More expensive which is why the majority don't.

We got one for less that $100. Obviously nothing fancy, just a 2 speed fan and a light.

Honestly I don't think they are really that great. It could be that it just a really cheap one though.

It's held in by 4 screws into the bottom of a couple cabinets mounted on the wall. The thing that kind of sucks is that all the smoke and grease that it sucks up gets blown onto the cabinets right above it. So the handles and doors are left with a sticky film.
