Just curious. Here in Michigan, every town, city, etc. has at least one annual festival; usually related to something tied to the locale (agriculturally, industry, etc). The funniest/ strangest festival in my area is probably the BayRama Fishfly Festival- a festival devouted to an insect that hatches each Summer along Lake St. Clair; the insects are a boon to the fish but cause a disgusting mess as homes, cars, etc. within maybe 20 miles (@ 30 kilometers) on the lake become coated with these insects.

I've heard of a pumpkin chucking contest/festival somewhere out in the midwest, it's like why would someone come up with it but it sure looks like fun! People build all of these weird things to make pumpkins go flying, some people build catapults out of surgical rubber bands while others make 50 feet long air cannons. They have to devote a whole field to this thing, I'm not sure how big it is but it's all treated like a shooting range because it could be really dangerous. The point is to get the best distance out of your class of contraptions (they have guidelines for classification) and if you win I think you get a trophy and some cash but you're really there for the experience, the cash isn't anything to live off of but it's really cool.
