As you can see, if you ask 20 people you will get 20 different answers. My opinions:
Best value for the buck would be Treasure Island. It is moderately priced, the rooms are nice, it is located in the central Strip, there is a tram that connects to the Mirage and they have a nice pool.
Personally, I feel very comfortable at the Mirage, although I have never stayed at the hotel.
Good luck!

My favorite places to stay that are a "good bargain/price" and very nice and have all the amenities that I want (i.e. buffets, bars, lounges, great casino) are the following:
1. Luxor - this casino has a HUGE pool and has about every game that you want to play (including a nice poker room). It also has a pretty cheap buffet compared to the other mainstreem hotels, and the rooms are very nice and its cool being in a hotel that has slanted ceiling b/c it is in the shape of a pyramid. You can get rates near $70-80/night with early bookings during the week, and ~ 150-180/night on holidays/wkends
2. New York New York - This hotel always has deals and has a lot of great bars and restaurants, and the people that stay here seem generally younger. The games are great here (no poker room) and the atmosphere is fast and loud (so if you want a quieter hotel this is not for you). Price is around $80-90/night early booking/wkdays, $150-170/wkends.
3. Monte Carlo - Has a great Micro brewery and great casino as well - which is something I always look for. The buffet here is probably one of the best bargains around. The swiming pool here is pretty nice too, though Luxor's pool definately is the best. Price is around $80-90/night early booking/wkdays, $150-170/wkends.
4. Mirage or Treasure Island - These are a little more pricey, but you do get a little more for what you pay for. The rooms a little bit nicer, and each have a nice club/lounge that is trendy and fun to hang out in (Tangerine in Treasure Island, JET at Mirage). They has have great buffets in each - much better in quality than the previously mentioned, but also at a much higher price ($30/person vs. < $18 at the other places). Price is around $120-130/night early booking/wkdays, $200-280/wkends.
You can also stay at cheaper places like the Stratosphere, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Tropicana, if you'd like - but I wouldnt recommend it (Price is around $60-70/night early booking/wkdays, $120-140/wkends.). Hotels in Vegas ARE the MAIN attraction, so I would spend a little extra money, plus this would prevent you from having to spend a lot of money on cabs. Have fun and hope this helps.

The Monte Carlo is close to mid-strip and is a very nice casino. I think that the Luxor is a fantastic hotel for first time Vegas visitors (go for a pyramid room if they don't mind a slightly warmer room) - it's an inside walk to the Excalibur (Vegas at its cheesiest) or the Mandalay Bay (elegant with great places to eat). Luxor is a short walk to NY NY, Monte Carlo, Tropicana and MGM Grand.
I always check Travelocity for good deals and I sign up on my favorite hotel's website for offers. There are good deals running on Planet Hollywood right now and Treasure Island. Depending on when you go, you can even get rooms at the Venetian for $99 a night - $139 - 200 usually. If you can get the Venetian for less than $170 per night then that is by far the best hotel for your money. It's an all suite hotel and the staff is phenomenally friendly and will bend over backwards to accomodate their guests.

We stayed at the Gold Coast. It is an older Hotel, we paid about $89 a night. Huge Gambling at this casino. It's a mile from the strip but they have a shuttle to the Bellagio. It's near the Palms and Rio. It was a great location even though it was off the strip it was near the popular casinos.Staying downtown Golden Nugget/Stratosphere or South end Luxor, Find out if they have shuttles to the major hotels. It's a good ways if they are walking and taxi's are a pain.

I always check cheapovegas.com for specials on hotels. We are staying in a $200 a night hotel room for $70 a night at MGM. I would avoid Flamingo the rooms are not what we were expecting. No matter what hotel they stay in I recommend the 24 hour pass to the Duece for transportation. That way they can go anywhere downtown or on the strip for $5 a day.

The Emperial Palace on the strip and a cheaper one. It is not a good place to gamble or see shows, but it has a great location and lots of rooms. It is right next to the Flamingo. Most hotels offer a better rate for Sunday through Thursday. The Emperial Palace almost always has an advertised deal going. Tell them you want the deal. If they ask which one, say you saw it advertised in the San Diego newspaper.

"Best hotel for your money"
To save money avoid weekends, large conventions and special events.
Staying "mid strip" will not save you money(haha) and is not necessary. >The strip is over 4 miles long and you can't walk to all of the other resorts from any other one "comfortable" anyway.

The best thing to do is stay in a resort. There are a lot of time shares there in Las Vegas. You can get a whole week's stay for around 200-300 dollars. The only thing is you will have to listen to a presentation for about 2 hours. You don't have to buy from them, so this is a great way to stay in a Resort instead of a hotel room. The resorts have a full size kitchen, living room, washer and dryers in them, and more.
I own 2 time shares there in Las Vegas. I travel there twice a year and I just love it there. I can give you a number to call if you would like. Email me if you want more details on this. I don't sell these time shares if you are wondering. I own with Wyndham Resorts and Westgate Resorts. I really like Wyndham more than I do the Westgate, but that is just my opinion.

The Orleans is a few blocks off the stip is nice. Circus Circus is not bad for the strip(lots of rug rats) Downtown you can get a lot of bang for your buck. I like Main Street Station.
Check out this web site for hotel reviews and detailed information on rates:

We were out there at the end of May this year and we stayed at the Travel lodge next to Circus Circus, I think it was $65.00 per night, clean room and we walked up the strip and had a great time.
