If the dentist hadnt taken the money twice would there have been enough funds to cover t-mobile?

if so then yes the dentist should be liable. He should refund the amount he took in error, refund the bank charge and also the t-mobile one. Ask your bank for advice on getting the money back.

I've read both your questions. Did you not think that you could've cancelled the first DD yourself? This is probably the way the dentist will see it. You should be able to claim back the extra money that the dentist took from you, but nothing else.

Write the dentist a simple not with the documentation.
You took two payments from my account. That caused me to incur overdrafts fees of $XX.XX.
I understand these errors do occur, but since it was your error you need to cover these costs. Please send me XX.XX within the next seven days. Also you would need to redeposit the extra charge of YY.YYY or include it in the check with my other fees.

Check how you are covered under the Direct Debit guarantee.
