Sometimes, yes. When a girl gets her first period depends on quite a few factors. With the increased amount of fats in our diets, girls today are starting their periods at much younger ages--sometimes as young as 10-12 years of age.
You also need to have a certain percentage of body fat to start having periods...which is why periods often seem to start around the same time that you need to start wearing bras and begin to notice your hips starting to get a bit wider.
My mom was very small and skinny, and she didn't start until she was 17 years old. I developed VERY early, and my first period came when I was a few months over 11 years old. My younger sister (like mom) was also very small and skinny, and she didn't start her cycles until she was 16.
There are a wide range of ages where periods can start; "normal" can be anything from age 10 onwards up to age 18!
Sorry to hear you are too embarrassed to ask your mum...I don't think that she would mind answering the question...especially seeing as how you are getting to that age where you are starting to think about periods and such.

I've heard that girls will and won't get their periods around the same age as their mothers. In my case, I got it around the same time as my mother...she was 14 when she started and I had just turned 14 a couple months before I started. Just ask your mom when she got her period, trust me, she knows you'll be curious. That way you can find out and give yourself an (approximate) idea. Hope this helps!

Generally that was true and is now to some extent. However, in the US, girls are starting to get their periods at a younger age than past generations. It is thought that this is due to nutrition and possible hormones in meat (cattle) and milk products. But, go ahead and ask her. She will probably welcome your questions. Sometimes Moms aren't sure when to talk to their daughters about sex and maturing. Take her the box of pads or tampons and ask when she thinks you'll need some, too. Good luck.

Good question; it could be some what hereditary, I'm not sure. I got mine when I was 13 and my daughter was 12 1/2. You should ask your mom, don't be embarrassed.

No. My mom started her period when she was 18. I started mine when I was 12. My mom says that many girls are getting their periods earlier in life because we drink milk. Apparently they put more hormones in cows to get more milk. So, the hormones come out in the milk, and we have our periods sooner. Big tip though, when it starts, have midol. My period makes me feel sick at my stomach and gives me horrible cramps to where I can't hardly do anything. Oh, and another tip... don't wear white :) I made the mistake once!

It can be. For example if your mom got her period when she was 16 it's possible that it will be the same with you. But it also depends on your body type etc.

Heredity can play a role but I wouldn't count on it too much.
My aunt got hers at 16 but both her daughters started before the age of 13.
