Yes the money you save in buying new filters is worth it alone. If you go with OEM(original equipment manufacturer) type your not likely to notice much of a difference in performance. I've used them for my last 4 vehicles and always been happy. Clean about once a year or so (I can't remember the exact specs when to change. If you want performance gain you'll have to fork over the dough for a CAI(Cold Air Intake). Cleaning kits(cleaner and oil) run about $12.00 at your local parts store or online.

of course they are if you consider the average new car air filter is about 15 to 20 and it needs to be changed every 15k or so and the k&n is a life time unit it pays for itself in the long run

If you faithfully re-clean them with their soap and re-oil kit every couple of yrs. I firmly believe you're getting a little boost of air in your intake system particularly if they are plumbed for outside air. If your present air box pulls outside air you've got a better deal than the swoopy jazzy underhood tubes that pull nothing but hot, low oxygen underhood air.
