you may not be over watering, but you are not watering correctly. tomatoes need to be watered regularly-----in the a.m. then again in the evening EVERY day. No skipping, no watering a TON in the a.m. then not at all in the evening.

COMMITT TO YOUR TOMATOES MAN!!!

Anything is possible. Tomatoes are very hard to grow. Last year I had bad experiences with them. This year I have a total of 10 different tomatoe plants and a few more growing seedlings in seperate pots.
About the cracks you probably are overwatering even so you are not aware.
What I would suggest perhaps put some plastic UV protectors over the tomatoes just to help them from cracking.

I water my tomatoe plants every third day now. Hope this helps! Year long farmer girl and now home gardner from organic food.

Another gardner told me that the best way to water tomatoes, is by soaking the roots of the tomatoe plant, making a circle arround it so that the water has a way of staying there.

Than do it every third or fourth day. When the heat is hotter do it twice a day morning and evening.

What also needs to be done is regulary fertilizing. If you prefer organic fertilization of tomatoes use bone meal or fish emulsion.

You may not be over-watering but you may be watering inconsistently. If plants dry out a bit and then get glut of water, this can cause cracking in the skin.

cracking in growing tomatoes can be caused by sporadic watering. The watering and feeding needs to be done at regular times.
