If a boat weighs 1600 N and must be lifted 0.8 meter (dout), how far down (din) must the input piston be pushed using a force of 500 N ?

Work = Force * Distance

You know that whatever work you do on the input piston, the same amount of work is done on the output piston, so

Work out = Work in
F1*x1 = F2*x2
(1600 N)*(0.8 m) = (500 N)*(x2)

Solving for x2, we find that
x2 = 2.56 m

1,600*0.8= 500*d so
d= 1,600*0.8/500 =2.56m
