I would say they are about as good as one another. I personally would recommend Toshiba or Gateway laptop above HP/Compaq and Lenovo. Lenovo is a relatively new brand and I haven't had much experience (it's IBM's old laptop devision which has been bought by a Chinese company.) Dell laptops are a decent compromise at a lower price than all the brands mentioned.

The best would be an hp laptop. Get the service plan too, they have a lot of problems so you want the extra support if you can have it. Especially after a year the battery usually stops working so the first few times let your computer die before you start recharging it again so you can keep the battery in top condition.

ibm lenovo thinkpads are the best laptops, besides mbp's that u can buy. they cost a litle more that other laptops, but its well worth it. just becasue thinkpads are made by lenovo now, that does not change the quality of them. i dont know y ppl recommend hp laptops, they suck, and yes i have used hp laptops on many occasions.
