What dimensions or physical characteristics can I rely on to classify the form factor?

I got a case from a friend to build a system, and other than "XION 4b2b 450W" from a receipt, I don't have anything else to go on. That of course means 4 bays / 2 bays, and 450W power supply. I just want to make sure I'm even looking at the correct parts to install.

Actually the power supply location is not the most telling factor, some ATX cases have the PSU on the bottom, and some BTX have it on the top. The most telling factor is that the motherboard is installed on the opposite side, another words if looking at the case from the front, on ATX the motherboard would be on the right side, on BTX on the left side. I would really not worry about this problem at all however, the BTX standard is basically dead for the most part, and the almost all of the very few cases made today that feature it as an option are also ATX compatible anyway.

EDIT: By the way, I wouldn't use Jake's method for figuring it out, since that is the fan system ATX cases (and just about every type of case in existence) uses as well.

Generally, BTX Cases will have the power supply on the bottom.

But, there are some ATX cases that do the same.

Most likely the one you have is a standard ATX. BTX has not really penetrated the market, so the chances of that case being BTX is pretty slim.

hmm can't even find a xion case that is btx compatible. basically from what i know if the access is from the left side of the case and the expansion slots are towards the bottom it is atx btx puts them towards the top or they get accessible only from the right side depending on the case manufacturers btx upgrade option.

All the connectors are NOT compatible... the power connector is not compatible at all with an ATX power supply... if you are lucky, you can buy an adapter on ebay for some (the larger ones), but if you got a micro btx power connectory, you're pretty much screwed.

btx uses air from the front of the case snd pushes it 2 the back to cool down the hardware. thats how i figure it out. btx cases have a ton of air vents on the front
