Well, not much; I've been barefoot for ten years. Glass is no problem; I never divert my step no matter how much glass I see and I get a tiny splinter maybe once a year, never had a cut. Thorns and such aren't a problem either if you're always barefoot; I've cleared bramble bushes without any problem. Okay beds of nails aren't good but how often do you come across those. :)

Dog poo sucks but it's worse with shoes; then you may not notice until you've gone inside and have to clean the carpet as well (I'm sure some of us have had this happen, long after you've already walked around everywhere someone will ask what smells so bad...). At least stepping in it barefoot I only have to wash the one foot!

Snow's no problem; I have been barefoot in winter too and actually had *less* trouble with cold feet than I had when I still wore shoes and especially rubber boots. I keep the rest of myself warm and my toes are fine. Nor do I get colds; I used to be sickly all winter but now I'm rarely if ever ill. Of course, there is a certain point when it gets too cold; I don't live in Alaska! Hot pavement is never a problem here; I wish it was, it's July and temps last week didn't even hit 60F, today's a little better but still lots of rain.

In short, the only things I would put shoes on for are *very* extreme circumstances, in weather (far below freezing or desert heat) or doing really extreme stuff like cleaning a junk yard or working with power tools that require hardhat/gloves/steel toed boots.

More or less whatever you wouldn't do with your hands--too cold, too sharp, or too hot--also keeping in mind that in many cases the foot arch does not toughen very much.

However, hot pavement is something I am working on getting used to for longer standing without having to go to a cooler surface or shade, and for much longer walking before the heat is so intense I need to go to a cooler surface or shade. I obviously don't want third degree burns, but even blacktop hot enough to blister bare feet is okay. I just drain the blisters before immediately going home, and then treat the blisters including a day or two of not going barefoot. Blisters that don't reattach gradually peel off. Blisters that do reattach show as great-looking calluses when the feet are even slightly dirty--a definite appearance of tougher soles.

51 bleedin' answers? Whoa. You are too good at these. I should retire and just let you do them from now on. :-)

You should never ever do anything without bare feet. Plain and simple. Everything is better with bare feet. We weren't meant to wear shoes, they don't fit over our paws at all.

Firstly you should never walk across a tarmac road/drive in the heat.....secondly never kick a plastic bin bag with rubbish in....thirdly never walk on gravel.......and the list could go on forever but these are the three main points on what not to do with bare feet..

step on broken glass or sharp, hot, poisonus things...
the skin is an organ too, which means it isjust as important to your body as your liver, heart ect... and it also means that it can absorb toxins that are bad for your body. stepping on dirt won't hurt, but wash it off. also, you should have your feet properly groomed (toenails clipped, heels filed, lotion ect...) or else you can develop corns, blisters, and other infections. NEVER walk on snow with bare feet, you will immediately loose body heat, as well as develop frostbite. a little pampering won't hurt... manicures, massages, blah blah blah. basically, if it hurts, don't walk on it! Keep those tootsies healthy! :) -freak
