It's only called the rubber game if the series is tied going into the decisive game. The term comes from meaning the "rubber ball bounces" in the team that wins favor. A rubber game can only come in a series with an odd number of games.

in a three game series or a 5 game for that matter, usually the last game is called the rubber game if the series is tied. the reason is that the series could bounce either way like its made out of rubber. depending on who wins the rubber game will win the series.

Tie-breaking game in a series, most commonly the last game in a three-game series when the first two games were won, one each, by the two teams. (During the season, three-game series are very common.)

The term "rubber" migrated from the card game bridge, where it has been used for the same concept (last, tie-breaking game) for well over a century. The exact etymology of the word is uncertain.

It's the decisive game in an odd number game series. It's the rubber game because it will determine the winner one way or the other.
