I mean culturally of course, not racially. I'm still trying to work it out. Younger people in particular seem to lack the aggression, sour sensuality, pride and shame that characterize their English-speaking counterparts. Their attitude to their bodies is more natural. Can any one explain this? Is it down to education or family upbringing? I don't think its religious, because in terms of religious observance and belief Germans are probably somewhere in between British and US people.

In answer to the replies already received, of course there are neo-nazi skinheads and of course this is impressionistic. Not everything can be scientifically measured. How much does love weigh?

I guess you havent heard of the Neo Nazi movement in Germany? Generalizations about people are generally untrue, there is no one collective mass of people that all act the same. Individual choice tends to nullify that theory.

European families used to raise their families differently, I dont know that they still do. They were much stricter with their children, they were taught to have manners which is something most western countries dont do with their children. I find that a lot of people in western countries dont even have decent table manners.

I was raised by a European father and we towed the line. My own children we raised to have manners, as my Grandson is also being raised.

Respect adults, if a lady comes into the room give her your chair, say please and thank you, eat like a human being not a pig in a trough, use the right cutlery, ask for permission to leave the table, dont talk back, dont interrupt when adults are talking, behave yourself in public, dont run around screaming and annoying other people, respect your parents, the rules are the rules .. etc.

Something most western countries appear to be lacking in. I am appalled at how children behave these days - I have seen them kicking and hitting their parents and screaming, running around like lunatics in restaurants or on public transit.

European families have been traditionally more involved in their children's lives as well. In westrn countries a lot of the kids pretty well fend for themselves while the parents go out to do their own thing, play their own sports, etc.

However in my own experience I have found German people living in western countries to be just a tad rude and pushy but thats just me. And part of my ethnic heritage is German Swiss.

Nothing. The Germans showed us a number of times just how civilized they are. Even Hitler himself said, " Ja, wir sind bestimpt de Germane". Yes, we are for sure barbarians.
People see in themselves, and in other people just what they want to see.
You site "examples" of Germans being ahead. Others will see superiority in the latins, still others in any other culture.
It's all in the head of the observer.
So far as language goes, English people are ethnic Germanics. The Welch, Scotch, Manx, and Irish people are ethnic Celts. All are speakers of modern English.
If you have observed any shame in the English speakers, I really believe that you need professional help.

Yeah, they love their bodies so much that the fat men wander the American beach in their tiny yellow speedos with their bellies lapping over the top while the even fatter spouse wears her two piece and the roll between the top and bottom is larger than her breasts. Gotta love those civilized bodies. And, how about cutting in line in the grocery stores, bumping into you with their carts, reaching in front of you for fruit or whatever. Oh, well. Guess I just don't agree that they are more civilized.

Then why are so many of them down right rude when they visit the US or move here? Most foreigners who come to the US for a vacation are polite and courteous. After living most of my life in a high tourist area, Washington, DC, I find that the most contankerous, demanding visitors are the Germans. My uncle and cousins are German and act the same way.

Americans, and British to a lesser extent, are ashamed of their bodies. German women seem to love their bodies, and I can only assume that it is religious guilt that spoils the Americans and Britons
