Hi, I am about to purchase a laptop, and it seems to have 802.11 a/b/g wireless thing. I also have a desktop at home with DSL connection. (SBC 2wire)

Anyway,

If I get my laptop, do I need a router and a wireless card for my desktop? Is there any other things i need?

And, is there any difference between wireless and wired connection? I prefer wireless but speed is the most important thing to me..

Any product you guys recommend (router/ wireless card/ any other thing, I prefer affordable gadgets, but if they suck, i don't want them-.-at all)?

Ok here's the deal most likely your laptop will come with a wireless card so that's good (if you bought it brand new, most laptops now have built in wireless card). If I am not mistaken the 2 wire modem from SBC has already have a wireless capability in it so if that's the case then you don't have to buy a router. But double check with SBC.

Now with your desktop please check it if has a wireless card installed/embed on the motherboard (check on the hardware profile of your computer so go to system then hardware). If not then yes you have to purchase wireless network card.

Basically wired connection is much faster compared to wireless. My advice is to get your laptop wireless then just let the desktop computer wired to the DSL modem. =)

I just did this exact same thing and it was the best thing I have ever done! Get a Linksys router (~$60). Your laptop and desktop should both already have a network card. Wherever you buy your router (CompUSA, Circuit City), they should offer someone to come out and set it up for about $125. Worth every penny of it. I keep my desktop in a large closet and only use it if I need to print or scan something quickly. The beauty is that you can go anywhere in the house with your laptop and work on-line. Speed is the same as on your wired desktop. It's fabulous! Battery should stay charged in your laptop for about 4 hrs; recharge overnight and you're ready to go the next day. I was a little reluctant in the beginning; now I wonder what took me so long. One additional thing that you may want to purchase is a mouse for your laptop. I have a wireless trackball. I just can't deal with moving my finger around that small pad on a laptop. Good luck!

Most wireless routers have a few wired ports, so you can keep your desktop on wired internet (and therefore not have to get a wireless card for the desktop), while using wireless in the laptop. The laptop will likely have both a wireless card and a wired card, so you don't NEED wireless for laptop, but it's considered very convenient so that you can take your laptop anywhere. As for speed, both wired and wireless will outclass your SBC internet connection, so you will not notice any difference in speed between wired and wireless.

See source for a link to a decent wireless router with 4 LAN ports. It's cheap as well.

You'll have to check with SBC to be sure- but the standard 2Wire homeportal routers already have wireless capability (even if you aren't currently using it) Does yours look like the picture in the link below?

Your laptop's built-in wireless card should be able to connect, just turn it on when you get home and see if a wireless network whose name begins with "2Wire" is detected. The wireless security key is usually the serial # from the bottom of the device.

Your desktop can just continue to connect via the regular wired cable, which is faster than wireless anyway.

Get a wireless router and a wireless card for your desktop. Linksys is good (made by Cisco). The connection speed will be as fast a a wired connection to the router, actually a little slower but you won't notice. The connection speed to the internet will depend on your service provider.
